Study On The Intertextuality Of Paratext In The Newspaper Discourse

Paratext in the newspaper discourse is the main object of study. From the perspective of intertextuality, this dissertation explores the intertextual relations between main text and paratext in the newspaper discourse, and makes systematic analysis on different types of intertextual relations in the newspaper discourse, and concludes that macro structure of newspaper discourse is jointly constructed by main text and paratext. The author thinks paratext plays an important role from the point of intertextuality, and has a far-reaching effect on dissemination of newspaper discourse. First chapter is the introduction. It introduces the object of this study, reviews the previous research and sources of language materials and states the method and value of this study. This chapter introduces the theory of intertextuality, especially cross-textual theory of Genette, which bring a new degree for the study of paratext in newspaper discourse.The second chapter discusses the paratext of the discourse and that of newspaper discourse. This chapter consists of three parts. The first part introduces paratext theory of Genette, and discusses from intertextuality and cross-text to paratext. It makes a probing analysis of dependence of paratext and difference determined by contents. The second part analyzes the rhetorical motivation of paratext, and classifies paratext form the perspective of the relationship between the main test and the paratext. The third part discusses the influence of genre on the setting of paratext in the news discourse from the angle of style classification of news discourse.The third chapter expounds the intertextual relations between the main text and fixed paratext. Fixed paratext includes two structural elements:power head and headlines. The first section analyzes intertextual relationship between power head and the outside-world test and that between power head and main test from the perspective of discourse function of the power head. The second section consists of three parts:the first part introduces the discourse features of the news headlines; the second part analyzes functional features of the news headlines from the perspective of the difference between the news headlines and other style headlines and the difference between paratext of the news headlines and that of other news discourse; the third parts analyzes intertextuality of the news headlines, involving analyzing intertextuality of the inside headlines from different types of headlines and analyzing intertextuality between headlines and main test from considering headlines as an overall collection of text.The fourth chapter discusses the intertextuality relationship between main test and flexible paratext. It firstly classifies this intertextuality into three forms and then analyzes the way of implementation of this intertextuality, which is the sign of intertextual relations in the news discourse and finally discusses the sign of intertexual relations from the perspective of the external form and internal intertextual form.The fifth chapter analyzes the intertextual relations constructed by pictures in the news discourse. This chapter mainly takes the research output of multimodal discourse linguistics as reference, classifies the picture-context relations of the news discourse into two parts and makes brief description of it by the example of the news pictures.Based on the above study and taking macro-structural theory of the news discourse proposed by Van Dijk as reference, the sixth chapter concludes that the macro-structure of the news discourse is jointly constructed by the main test and paratext and makes a probing analysis of influence of paratext’s setting on the overall framework of the news discourse.Epilogue makes the conclusion, introduces the origin of study, research thought, the value and shortage of study and suggests the further issue.
