Discussion On The Space Of Yu Dafu’s Novels

Yu Dafu is a writer who has specific ideas. His life has many ups and do wns. His life and works attract people’s attention. Of course, there are a lot of p eople slandered him. Yu Dafu’s novel has no magnificent background, no descript ions of major events, which is only reflect a part of the daily life. Time in Yu Dafu’s novels is relatively short, and the event is single. Yu Dafu’s novels is mai nly to express the inner world of the characters, and the related experience. The refore, space and time in Yu Dafu’s novels are not balanced. Yu Dafu emphasi s depicting the heroine in the subtle inner world, as well as the feelings of the h ero to the outside world. Yu Dafu pays more attention to create novel space, n ot devoted to give a comprehensive discussion on the hero’s life, also not attemp t to reflects the complex reality. Most researchers research the works of Yu Daf u’s thought and the artistic method to judge his works’quality. In this thesis, I use the spatial analysis method to make a systematic study on the space of Yu Dafu’s novels, and interprete the unique charm of Yu Dafu’s novels.My paper consists of three parts:The first chapter mainly based on the text, drawing lessons from the theory in Henry Lefebvre’s book ’production of space’. Dividing the space of Yu Daf u’s novels into natural space, social space and psychological space. Basing on th e text to analyze three kinds of space. For natural space, describing the unique a esthetic elements in Yu Dafu’s novels novels, the feelings of the literati to lands cape of the place; for social space, analysising the performance and concern for t he external society in the personalized novels; for the mental space, examining the personal and psychological characteristics of Yu Dafu and his novels, including1oneliness and inferiority. On the basis of the above, the second chapter sums up the characteristics o f the three kinds of the overall space:liquid nature, drawing nature and symbol nature. In Yu Dafu’s novels the time span is very short. The novel characters an d the plot is relatively simple. Yu Dafu’s novels is mainly to express the inner world of the characters, concerning about the immediate scene and the inner tho ughts. So the space of Yu Dafu’s novels is the exteriorization and extension o f writer’s personal emotions. Therefore, Yu Dafu does not pay attention to the plot. His novels like prose and travel notes. It makes the space of his novels presen t liquid nature. And there are many descriptions of the beautiful drawing-like nat ura. It makes the space of his novels present drawing nature. The space of Yu Dafu’s novels hint a deep meaning of inner world. This is the symbol nature of the space in Yu Dafu’s novels. Finally, this paper expounds the complex rela tionship between the space and time to furtherly analyse the space of Yu Dafu’s novels, including the compressing time to prominent space and using space to tr ansformat time.The last part of the paper, which is the third chapter, analyse and discuss on the form and reason of space in Yu Dafu’s novels. There are two most impo rtant reasons:the influence of the Japanese ’private novel’and the traditional Chi nese scholars’thoughts and feelings for landscapes、poetry and wine. The Japa nese’private novel’makes Yu Dafu’s novels introverte to form a’closed self and internalizing mental space; and the traditional Chinese scholars’ thoughts and fe elings for landscapes make Yu Dafu’s novels present aesthetic characteristics of painting; and writing poems while drinking and dissoluting is to hint and clear u p the turbulence of social space.
