Since1970s more and more researchers have turned their attention to language learning research from language teaching, they gradually realized that learners played an important role in language learning and their individual differences have more effects on language learning.Compared to the students in first grade universities, the students in independent colleges have weak foundation in English learning. At the same time, there exist mixed groups of students with different levels of English ability in the same class. In this situation, teachers have many difficulties in their process of English teaching. This dissertation attempts to study the correlation between Field-independence/dependence cognitive styles and English achievements in Independent colleges hoping to provide some suggestions on Independent College English Teaching.In this paper,72non-English major students from Wenhua College are selected as the research subjects from three different majors, news and media, electronic information and accounting.First, Student’s FD/FI cognitive styles are measured by EFT(Embedded Figures Test). And their English achievements are judged by Final Term Examination. After inputting these records into computer, this paper will do descriptive analysis and correlation analysis by using the SPSS19.0of the two groups were obtained.In order to achieve the purpose of the study, this paper aims to answer the following questions:1). Does the FI/FD cognitive style have correlation with the English learning achievement?2) To what extent are the subjects’ FI/FD correlated with their listening section?3) To what extent are the subjects’ FI/FD correlated with their reading section?4) To what extent are the subjects’ FI/FD correlated with their writing section?After the analysis of the data, the results are as following:field cognitive styles and the overall English level of studentsexist significant correlation, FI cognitive styles and the English listening level of students also correlate significantly,it showed significant correlation between FI and English reading achievement as well as the correlation between FI and English writing achievement.This research aims to apply the findings to Independent Colleges English teaching for helping teachers and students realize cognitive styles fully, then improve the Independent College English teaching effectively.
