With the rapid development of the Internet, the English version of Chinese university profiles has been regarded as an important window to the outside world for establishing a-good image and promoting the foreign publicity. As people’s first impression of a university, the English version of its profile in the webpage plays an irreplaceable role in the process of foreign publicity.Under the guidance of the Functionalist Approach, this thesis explores the translation brief of university webpage profiles. Twenty samples of university profiles, selected respectively from the bi-lingual websites in China and the websites in the English-speaking countries, constitute a small corpus for the research. The thesis makes a comprehensive analysis of the differences between the university profiles in China and the English-speaking countries in the aspects of textual organization, content, language and culture. It is pointed out that these disparities should be taken into consideration in the translation process. Three workable principles for the translation of university webpage profiles, namely, practicability, briefness and acceptability, are discussed and summed up here. On the basis of the analysis of the existing translation errors in the English version of university webpage profiles, the author of this thesis puts forward the adaptation strategy from the macro perspective and elaborates on four translation methods specifically at the micro level so as to help further improve the translation quality of university webpage profiles.
