A Study Of China English As An English Variety

Language, as an important communication tool of humans, is always in theprocess of continuous movement. Language contact inevitably causes the variation oflanguage. English, as the most international language, is internationalized rapidly,thus causing its extensive localization. The essence of culture is the specific valuesand thoughts. Each nation lives in a specific natural and geographical environment,and has its own historical background and cultural traditions, hence forming its ownway of thinking. Often influenced by culture, language reflects a nation’s values andthoughts accordingly. English, with the brand of Chinese culture, is gradually in theprocess of localization in China, and forms a unique international communication tool,China English.China English is a product of English globalization, an English variety withChinese characteristics, a variety is based on standard English combining Englishwith the Chinese culture, reflecting the Chinese unique way of thinking andvalues. This thesis, not only discusses the theory research status of China English athome and abroad from the perspective of culture, language and thought, but alsoexplains the necessity of China English from cross-cultural communication. Secondlyaccording to various stages of Chinese diplomatic policy transition since the Chinesefounding, it excavates the origin of China English, and elucidates the developmentand change of China English by citing examples under the different diplomaticpolicies. Then the thesis expects the future of China English, and affirms theimportant role of China English in China’s diplomacy. It also uses a large number ofexamples to present the characteristics of China English as an English variety inphonological, lexical, syntactic and discourse levels. Finally, the author attempts toanalyze the application of China English in cross-cultural communication, and itsspecification applied in the translation and English teaching in China. Moreover, itaffirms the positive significance of the study of China English, and points out that theresearch on China English will not only help spread the Chinese civilization andChinese culture, but also plays an important role in strengthening national identity andpromoting cross-cultural communication.The emergence of China English means that China, which is integrating into the international culture of the modern society, has its own cultural identity ininternational intercourse, and has an immeasurable role both at home andabroad. Especially in the publicity，China English can express Chinese peculiarthoughts and culture more accurately and more fluently, so that Chinese long-standingthoughts and culture can be conveyed effectively. Although China English is notwidely accepted currently, it has exhibited the development tendency that cannot beignored anymore. We have a responsibility of promoting the development of ChinaEnglish in the spreading of Chinese culture, but we should not be too picky or denyit blindly.
