In this paper, I intend to combine the society and cultural context of the Victorian era with Hardy’s life experience.The love and marriage in Hardy’s novels are the basic points to explore the forming reason of his love and marriage concepts and its significance.The first chapter deals with the love and marriage of his novels.Hardy thinks that the perfect marriage is one which they have same ideals and pursuits.He emphasized the importance of responsibility consciousness.The second chapter analyzes the causes of love and marriage in Hardy’s novels.This includes mainly.Hardy has unusual marriage experiences, the idea of Victorian family,the demands of religion and law.The third chapter discusses the meaning of love and marries concepts in Hardy’s novels.On the one hand,Hardy rebelled the tradition.On the other hand,Hardy compromised with society.Through his novels,we can realize that Hardy is dissatisfied at the alienation of people under the industrial civilizations.Hardy hope humans returned to nature.He emphasized the important of altruistic spirit.Hardy’s exploration has a great time significance.
