It has long been thought that the studies of painting art are divided into nothing morethan content category and formal category. How to embody contents by forms has alwaysbeen the topic that aspiring artists are interested in. Especially in20th century, global paintingideological trend was greatly affected by the rise of western modern art, which motivated lotsof artist to make researches and innovation in the formal expression of painting. Westernartists drew some creation resources from oriental art. At the same time, eastern artists alsoopened their horizon. They are influenced by western cultures including painting concepts,forms and theories.Kaii Higashiyama is a Japanese painter, but his art theory and creative accomplishmentsare cosmopolitan. He has been involved in the exploring the fusion of eastern and western art.He insists on the painting theme of “exploration of the beauty of Japan”. In the meantime, healso reviews the painting art by a modern, comparative and developmental view. Because hisreflection on Japanese traditional painting and the deep understanding of western art, KaiiHigashiyama succeeds in combining oriental art spirit with western modern art perfectly.Consequently he forms his distinct and unique style of art in landscape painting.Based on the examples of Kaii Higashiyama’s landscape painting, the thesis explores theformation of formal expression of painting by analyzing the elements that influence his artconcept and unique skills. It also illustrates the modernity of formal expression in hislandscape paintings. The thesis concludes some insight for us from his creation methods andformal expressions.The thesis is divided into four parts.Part one: Statement of the argument. This part mainly analyzes the contents of paintingformal expression and the relationship with spiritual connotation from a theory angle.Part two: Introduction of the creating experience and painting features of KaiiHigashiyama. This part specifically analyzes the content of painting formal expression of KaiiHigashiyama and makes perspective arguments in terms of specific works.Part three: Summarizes research Kall Higashiyama aesthetic value and practicalsignificance. Part four: Elaborate a final conclusion: This part comes to a final conclusion according tothe factors above. It concludes that the existence of painting forms should be harmonious withspiritual connotation. It means that arts would better choose the most appropriate formalexpression to express their mood so as to form their own unique artistic style.
