This paper studies Xu Chi’s translation style under the theoretical framework of translator’s subjectivity. In respects of choice and interpretation of source text, adoption of translation methods and way of expression, this paper concludes Xu Chi’s translation style as:1) a combination of peace and passion in the tone;2) bearing the mark of his time;3) literal translation and foreignization;4) concision and musical rhythm. This study not only illustrates the four aspects of Xu Chi’s translation style with close textual analysis in Walden, but also probes into the reasons for the formation of such a style by relating to the historical background, Xu Chi’s life experience and his accomplishments in other fields of art and literature.
