On The Translator’s Subjectivity From The Perspective Of Translation Ecology

With the emergence of “culture turn”, an increasing number of scholars shifted their focus to the subjectivity of the translator. By adopting the theory of Translation Ecology, this thesis, based on the natural, social, normative and psychological environment of translation, puts emphasis on descriptive exploration of Howard Goldblatt’s English version Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out. It aims to probe into the influence of translator’s subjectivity and put forward an ideal translator’s model for Chinese literature walking toward the word.This thesis can be divided into six chapters. Chapter One introduces the background, motivation, significance and organization of this study. Chapter Two makes an overview of studies on the subjectivity of the translator both at home and abroad and deals with the previous studies on Howard Goldblatt’s translation thoughts and English version Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out. Chapter Three puts emphasis on the theoretical framework, which introduces the origin and development of translation ecology and expounds the eco-environment of translation in a detail way.Chapter Four focuses on the translator and eco-environment of translation. The author discusses the development of translator’s subjectivity and the relationship between Howard Goldbltt’s subjectivity and eco-environment of translation as well. Chapter Five is the main body of the thesis. From the aspects of natural, social, normative and psychological environment of translation, the author does a case study of English version Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out to illustrate Howard Goldblatt’s subjectivity exerting in the process of translation theoretically. And then she makes a summary of the translation strategies and methods used by Howard Goldblatt. Chapter Six makes a conclusion of the thesis, including major findings, limitations and suggestions for further studies.By probing into Howard Goldblatt’s English version Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out, the author finds that literature’s translation isn’t the literal transferring. In the process of literature’s translation, the translator should take the influence of eco-environment of translation into full consideration and make reasonable selection on the translation methods and strategies. Furthermore, the translated works of HowardGoldblatt have been accepted by the target readers. Consequently, the sinologist translator’s model taking Howard Goldblatt as an exemplar is the ideal one for Chinese literacy “going-out”.
