Being in different language families with different cultural backgrounds, Chinese and English languages have formulated their own rhetoric systems over centuries of development. Between them there are similarities as well as differences, which make their translatability relative, and the limitation of translatability absolute. All those require translators to adopt different techniques of translation so that the translation could have a similar effect on target language readers as the source text has on the source language reader while retaining its original writing style. This report, based on the author’s translation of Field of Vision, will observe the writinng style and text features of this novel and thereby identify the translation difficulty---figures of speech translation(FST). The author will compare the rhetoric systems between the two languages and, baesed on this translation program, conclude four translation strategies---literal-translation, conversion, compensation and abandoning---that may apply to real translation practice.
