This thesis studies the news headlines in both English and Chinese, through the comparison of their usages of the commonly-used figures of speech respectively, aiming to provide accounts for their translation. Under the editor-and-reader-choice situation, recognition and satisfaction are what all media compete for. Therefore news editors try their best to compose enchanting headlines to arrest reader's attention. In order to achieve this aim, figures of speech are always taken into consideration. Figure of speech is an important factor in culture and yet a hard corn in translation as well. Great many news headlines collected from different newspapers are analyzed and the materials for my study are from the domestic and overseas popular publications including People's Daily, Southern Weekend, China Daily, Financial Times, the Times and so on. In the end, some practical translating strategies are suggested for the figures in the news headlines between English and Chinese.Generally to say, the couple of figures of speech in both languages do have egregious similarities, but that does not mean they are corresponding to each other exactly, so English and Chinese terms are used and illustrated respectively. With limited space, time and energy, and more importantly, for the study of figures of speech is an unending and limitless job, this thesis can not exhaust all the figures of speeches in both languages. Only frequently-used figures of speech in headlines in both English and Chinese are touched upon in this thesis.This thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter One introduces the definition, developing history, the function and classification pertaining to the fundamentals of news headlines. Chapter Two deals with the overview of the origination and development of rhetoric and figures of speech in both English and Chinese and a comparative and contrastive study is made.
