Interpretation Strategies Of Idioms In C-E Simultaneous Interpretation

The Chinese idiom is a cultural expression and a grammatical peculiar to Chinese language. The process of interpreting Chinese idioms into English is a challenging task for simultaneous interpreters. Since people of different languages often use different idioms, which are inalienable parts of each unique culture, the meaning of idioms cannot be understood simply from the words. The best such simultaneous interpreters must have a good grasp of both cultures and languages and be able to find an efficient equivalent promptly while keeping their minds on a speaker’s words and translating them into the target language at the same time. Insufficient language and cultural knowledge and lack of corresponding collocations often trigger a sequence of problems, give rise to greater psychological pressure of the interpreters, and sometimes threaten interpretation quality and effective communication. This thesis aims at exploring the influence of Chinese idioms on interpretation quality and finding efficient interpretation strategies that can be employed.The Interpretive Theory, with the notion of "de-verbalization" at its core, provides a theoretical support for analyzing interpretation strategies of Chinese idioms in Chinese-to-English simultaneous interpretation. This paper proposes four possible copying strategies and conducts an empirical study to examine their effectiveness.
