Realistic oil painting, originated from west Europe, has long history background and profound tradition. It boomed for500years, reached its climax during the Renaissance and exerted great influence. It can be said that:the art history before20th century is the history of realistic oil painting. Compared with that of the West, Chinese realistic oil painting simply has100-year of history though it has been playing a decisive role in the process of Chinese culture development since the introduction of realistic culture and the beginning of new cultural thoughts. In the developing of contemporary art history, realistic oil painting also holds a significant status. Early in the twentieth Century, after western realism was introduced into China, the older generation of oil painters in Hainan began to explore realistic oil painting. Many of them, including famous artist Fu Baxiong, studied oil painting vast abroad in Europe. Realistic oil painting began to show up prominently in Hainan from then on.Being an Isolated island and far away from the mainland, Hainan once was a wild land for exiles. Although located on the cutting edge of the frontier, it is never short of cultural resource and enjoys profound culture with distinctive regional and ethnic characteristics. Investigation indicates realistic oil painting began to spread and develop in Hainan since1920s. There are numerous successful predecessors in this field who studied abroad in their early ages and achieved worldwide reputation. The development of Hainan realistic oil painting can be divided into four phases:first, before the establishment of PRC; second, from the establishment of PRC to the eve of the Cultural Revolution; three, in the whole Cultural Revolution; and fourth, from the end of the Cultural Revolution to the present. Explored, taught as well as propagated by predecessors for about a century, realistic oil painting in Hainan grew vigorously since the foundation of PRC. Though stagnated during the Cultural Revolution, it has still been carried forward on its solid culture base and keeps flourishing with the joint efforts of generations of oil painters adhering to their artistic creating with Hainan local characteristics. However, there are very few works about the development of realistic oil painting in Hainan. After reviewing literatures and paintings, this paper resorts out the developing process of realistic oil painting in Hainan, unfolds its brief frame, and then, on the study of its current situation, puts forward its future development direction.
