Shaanbei area is the northern part of Shaanxi Province, locates in the eastern partof Hetao Plain, with Luliang Mountains to the east and Maowusu Desert to the west,next to Ordos Plateau in the north and Wei River Valley to the south. In this erea,discoveries of archaeological remains are relatively intense and the characteristics areunique, which make this area become the central region of Jin-Shaan Plateau culturedistrict. During the Late Longshan Age, Li vessels with double handles start toemerge in this area, containing both side-attached double handle ones andfacade-attached double handle ones. During the next period of culture development,variety kinds of Li vessels, Jia vessels, He vessels, Yan vessels with two handles andUrns with three hollow legs, Jars with long neck enriched the typical combination ofpotteries in this area, and this combination lasts from the Late Longshan Age till theXia Period.As for staging studies on remains in this area of the Late Longshan Age atpresent, due to the lack of layer position information for some typical artifacts, studieson periodization are difficult to establish a unified and clear standard. This paperattempts to establish the sequence of Shaanbei Late Longshan Age remains in theview of Li vessels with double handles as the Li vessels has already been analyzed inadjacent areas in the Jin-Shaan Plateau Double handle Li vessel System. By thismeans, according to the change and development of pottery combinations containingLi vessels, an approach of periodization of all sites in this area can be made.Furthermore, we will have a discussion on the cultural relationships among Jinzhongarea, South central Inner Mongolia and Southwest of Shanxi area.This paper contains four parts as follows: ChapterⅠ PrefaceThis part defines the range of the research subject, and summarizes the currentsituations, existing problems of studies on the remains of Late Longshan Age inShaanbei area. Then it introduced the research purpose and methodology of this paper.ChapterⅡ Periodization of Remains of Late Longshan Age in Shaanbei areaThrough the analysis of remains from Xinhua Site, Shimao Site, and etc., thispart attempts to clarify the relative chronological relationships among these sites andestablish the cultural sequences.ChapterⅢ Cultural Relationships between Shaanbei area and surrounding areasThis part first analyzes the cultural characteristics of the archaeological culturewhich contains Li vessels with double handles in Jinzhong area, South central InnerMongolia and Southwest of Shanxi area. Next, discussion on cultural relationshipsand interaction among these cultures is carried out. In the end, we can come to aconclusion that the two stages of Shaanbei remains own more similarities to XinghuaCulture and Youyao Remains from Jinzhong area.Chapter ⅣConclusionThis part summarizes the main points of the paper, and outlines author’sviewpoint of the later stage of the Late Longshan Age Remains in Shaanbei area canbe defined as a local type of the Jin-Shaan grand culture district. And this type may benamed as “Xinhua Type”.
