Today, entertainment has diverse forms and traditional folk consciousness is fading,intangible traditional cultureshave a deterioratingliving environment,which need to beprotected and inherited. Although documentaries of which the theme is intangiblecultural heritage not yet have official definitions and explanations at the moment, theyare already common practice.From CCTV and the satellite channels to small local TV stations, civil independentdirectors and even DV enthusiasts are leaving image datas for Chinese traditional folkcrafts and traditional cultures unintentionally. However, although intangible culturalheritage documentaries are numerous, the research of such documentaries is notmuch,they lack theoreticalguidance and summary. This paper takes the author’s graduatedesign documentary "The last stick——Zhu Changwei’s dream of intangible culturalheritage" for example.On the basis of shooting and making the documentary, this papercombsthe commons of intangible cultural heritage documentaries, and explorestheeffects of image recording in protecting and inheritingintangible cultural heritages. Thispaper also digs the problemsin recording intangible cultures by images, and proposesappropriate solutions. In addition,fromlearning the excellent documentaries, andinspired by the practice of the author’s graduate designdocumentary, this paper putsforward recommendations for the future development of intangible cultural heritagedocumentaries.
