| The dissertation focuses on the Coming of Age Ceremony, Thanks Aunt, a rite of passage with local characteristics in Xinluo District, Longyan, Fujian, to analyze the relationship between a local Coming of Age Ceremony and Communication from a broader perspective. The dissertation introduces the Coming of Age Ceremony, Thanks Aunt, analyzes the relationship among Thanks Aunt, Bed God, a god in folk belief, and Mazu, analyzes the change and extension of the role and function of Mazu, and speculates the path of Mazu belief into Xinluo District,Longyan.By analyzing depth interviews with interviewees who have experienced Thanks Aunt selected by purposive sampling and snowball sampling. combining with literature, and considering Thanks Aunt in social background, we can conclude that there are various factors influencing communication of Thanks Aunt, which are politics, gender, personality and image, religion, primary group and education. The communication of Coming of Age Ceremony itself is deemed as status advancement.The dissertation analyzes the influence of the Coming of Age Ceremony on people in shaping subculture and social identity in sharing information representation, in the ritual view of communication proposed by James Carey.With increasingly involving in human life, electronic media has created media ceremonies. We discuss modern ceremony by the conquest of time and space, social identity and political function, especially the similarities and differences between electronic ceremony created by electronic media and traditional ceremony in shaping identification, to emphasize the value and significance of a local ritual in defending cultural diversity when it encounters modern culture which is more pervasive and universal than itself.The dissertation explores the possibility of the heritage of the Coming of Age Ceremony, Thanks Aunt in Xinluo District,Longyan,Fujian, with local characteristics in the process of modernization from people’s status and attitude to Thanks Aunt. |
