Discussion About Mother Image In Chi Li’s Novels

Chi Li is representative of the new realism writers. She stands in the perspective ofordinary citizens, has depicted a lot of vivid characters which are true representation of thejoys and sorrows of ordinary people, and is loved by readers. Mother images account for alarge proportion of her work. Maternal growth, maternal awareness and mother-daughterrelationship are also important theme in Chili creation. This paper is based on the motherimages as the main object of study, through the close reading of texts, takes mother-daughter,relationship between the maternal and patriarchal culture as perspective, analyzes therelatively strong "examining the mother consciousness" and "mother myth" deconstruction inthe works, mines the creative power of the mother image. And by the resentment betweenmother and daughter appearing in the works, the right way to deal with intergenerationalrelationships is discussed.The introduction summarizes the situation in Chili creative works on the image ofmotherhood, the current status of the present academic world, the necessity and feasibility ofthis thesis.The first chapter classifies the mother image in the works, and takes the typicalcharacters as examples to discuss the maternal consciousness behind the images. Chi Li doesnot blindly beautify mother. Instead, the objective existence "ugly" in real life is also broughtout to make the characters more real and concrete.The second chapter mainly focuses on the resentment between mother and daughter inChi Li’s works. The supreme authority, suffocating and pressing suppress of the motherimages are reflected. The confrontation between mother and daughter is portrayed. Theslightly torn maternal and daughters’ self-awareness lead to family break. At last, the analysisof the reasons of confrontation is given from the perspectives of work and creativepsychology.The third chapter mainly studies on the relationship between the motherhood andpatriarchal culture. By the description of mighty power of the mother images which act as theparent rights defenders, the "matriarchy" view of Chi Li is analyzed. In Chinese families, the woman turns to be a patriarchal owner after she has been a mother who has the authority offatherhood. Chi Li demonstrates the "evil" side of mother image, peels off the holy cover ofthe mother images in traditional works，exposes the properties of dark and ugly which has notbeen revealed for a long time, and it is a deconstruction to the image of the ideal mother in thepatriarchal culture.The fourth chapter analyzes driving force of Chi Li’s creation from several perspectives,such as growth experience, lacking experience, collective unconscious, west feminismthoughts, and has discovered the meaning of his work in two areas of literature and education.The limitations of creation related to the mother image are given in conclusion.The mother images in Chi Li’s works have been get rid of the perfect one of the virginmother. The true state in real life is restored, the beauty and ugliness of mother images areportrayed, and their gains and losses are judged. Through real strokes, various emotions ofsecular mother are shown out. Chi Li’s insight of their inner world gives us a deeper thoughtto the mother image.
