The syntactic ambiguity in business contracts belongs to the cross knowledge oflinguistics and law. This thesis uses the theory of syntactic ambiguity as the mainstructure under the innovation of predecessors’cognition analysis of ambiguitystructure. And it emphasizes to study and analyze contrastively the categories andfeatures of the syntactic ambiguity in business contracts through thecontextual analysis in order to find the principles avoiding the ambiguity.This thesis makes a deep research on the contract ambiguity from the syntax.Considering about the limitation of time and length, its focus is on the ambiguity ofphrasal adjectives, ambiguity of restrictive and non-restrictive attributive clauses,ambiguity of negative and subordinate clauses, ambiguity of references, ambiguity ofpost-modifiers, ambiguity of adverbs and adverbial phrases, ambiguity of prepositions.The whole analysis summarizes the achievements of the scholars at home and abroadand explicates the significance of syntactic ambiguity research in business contracts.According to the research questionsand date processing, there are different types ofsyntactic ambiguity in business contracts and corresponding ways of disambiguationstrategies. The conclusion is that in accordance with the types of ambiguity inbusiness contracts, different syntactic ambiguities have the structural similarities.Punctuation, structural adjustments and so on can effectively avoid ambiguity and provide the new way of the linguistic and law crossing research to enlighten theunderstandingof the syntactic ambiguity in the international business. Seven types ofdisambiguation strategies could be effective to avoid the contract disputes and theeconomic issues.
