David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas is published in2004. This novel consists of six stories happened in six different times and places, and the six stories are written in six different styles. The novel is innovative in structure, and has a wide range of topics and thought-provoking subjects. There are two versions of Chinese translation:one from Chinese mainland and the other from Taiwan.Domestication (or domesticating strategy) and Foreignization (or foreignizating strategy) are two distinctive translation strategies introduced by Lawrence Venuti. A translated text using domesticating strategy reads naturally and fluently, and does not seem to have been translated. Foreignizing strategy keeps foreign culture features of source language, and aims to communicate linguistic and cultural differences. The theoretical basis for this thesis is Domestication and Foreignization. By comparing translation examples in two Chinese versions of Cloud Atlas, this thesis analyzes translation strategies adopted in these two versions from five aspects, namely idiomatic expressions, foreign objects, proper noun, language images and language style. It explores whether these translation strategies keep foreign culture features, whether these translation can be accepted by readers, and whether these translation can promote culture exchange. It turns out that the two Chinese versions of Cloud Atlas have both adopted a foreignizing-oriented strategy supplemented with domesticating translation:adopting foreignizing strategy when the translated text can be easily understood by readers; and turning to domesticating strategy when some foreign concepts cannot be accepted by readers. This thesis concludes that in translating foreign culture features, translators should adopt a foreignizing-oriented strategy supplemented with domesticating translation, and add notes when necessary.
