On Translation Of The Warmth Of Other Suns:the Epic Story Of America’s Great Migration From The Perspective Of Translation Shifts

The differences between languages make it hardly possible to achieve total equivalence in translation. Thus, target texts would, to some extent, shift from source texts in form. This phenomenon has drawn the attention of scholars and thus relevant studies occur. In1965, J. C. Catford introduced the concept "translation shifts" and established his analytical framework. Based on his research, the later scholars have explored this issue from various aspects.Based on the translation of Part Four of The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration, the current thesis, with the help of Catford’s and Al-Zoubi’s analytical models, categorizes and describes the translation shifts in the target text. It is found that relevant examples of translation shifts could be sorted into two classes, namely the inner-sentence class and the above-sentence class. Within the first class there are level shifts, structural shifts, class shifts, and unit shifts; in the second class, there are shifts concerning semantic component, textual component, pragmatic component, rhetorical component, and stylistic component respectively.With this thesis, the current author hopes that future researchers would gain some insights concerning the studies of translation shifts or borrow some related examples. And it could not be better if the source text or target text would provide some information for those who are interested in American history.
