Globalization is a natural developmental tendency of the post-colonial world. During this process, cultures of different peoples and nations are interlayered and mixed, forming the phenomenon of cultural fusion. However the process of cultural fusion is not always smooth. Every nation and its people has met a lot of difficulties and challenges in this process. South Africa is one of them. Due to the special colonial history, the process of cultural fusion is much more difficult for South Africa. The South African writer Nadine Gordimer’s July’s People reflects the hard struggle of its people in the process of South Africa’s cultural fusion. Under the influence of racial discrimination, especially Apartheid, there have been a lot of contradictions and conflicts between Blacks and Whites in South Africa. In this novel, with her insight, the author shows the fact that there are still plenty of challenges if Blacks and Whites want to create a new harmonious society of cultural fusion. This thesis analyzes the changes of identities and roles of Whites and Blacks in the interregnum of South Africa and tries to show the challenges and influences on the cultural fusion of Whites and Blacks in South African society. At the same time, this paper aids people to think about how to deal with racial problems in the process of cultural fusion under the background of globalization when more and more communication activities occur. Hence, this paper analyzes the possible conflicts in the process of cultural fusion by taking Nadine Gordimer’s July’s People as a special case, and reminds people to pay more attention to the possible problems in the process of cultural communication. Eventually human beings can realize better development. The paper uses mainly the postcolonial critical theory. Combining the three major postcolonial critics’ theories with Nadine Gordimer’s July’s People, this paper analyzes the "postcolonial" problems which both Blacks and Whites are confronted with in the process of cultural fusion. The former research is concentrated on the analysis of the characters in the novel. The creativity of this paper is to analyze Nadine Gordimer’s July’s People from the perspective of cultural communication in the postcolonial era and to generalize the significance of this study to the different peoples’ cultural communication, besides Blacks and Whites.
