Postcolonial theory is a specifically post-modern intellectual discourse that consists of reactions to, and analysis of, the cultural legacy of colonialism. There are a few notable postcolonial theorists, such as Edward Said, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak and Frantz Fanon. Frantz Fanon is a Maxist as well as a radical humanist in Algeria, whose works have greatly inspired anti-colonial liberation movements in Algeria and other colonies. This thesis applies Fanon's postcolonial theory to analyze the identifying problems of the former black exiles and the white Africans, who are also part of the Liberation Movement and the racial conflicts stemming from the apartheid system.Nadine Gordimer, the Nobel Prize Winner in 1991, was thought highly of by the Swedish Academy"through her magnificent epic writing has—in the words of Alfred Nobel—been of very great benefit to humanity". Her novel None to Accompany Me is a transitional one and her first to be set and written after the watershed of February 1994, dwelling on the identifying problems of each group and racial conflicts at the moment of interregnum and therefore has far-reaching significance. This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter One serves as an introduction to the writer and her literary career, literary review of the novel None to Accompany Me, the party ANC and the layout of the thesis. Chapter Two discusses Didymus, the black ex-exile's identifying problem. Chapter Three deals with the white Vera's failure in reconciling private life with public responsibility. Based on the individual analysis of the previous chapters, Chapter Four addresses different forms of racial violence and crime. Chapter Five draws the conclusion that apartheid has inflicted great affliction on the colonized people and much should be done to eliminate its negative effects and achieve the cultural hybridity among multi-races, but the prospect of South Africa's moving beyond apartheid is remarkably promising with the unremitting effort of the whole country.
