TV interviews came into being in China in1990s, which provided people with a stage on which people can communicate with each other, and share the value of some social issues together. Originating from the foreign countries and experiencing for about half a century’s development, it becomes more mature and more popular in China nowadays. In1993, the first TV interview appeared and was called "the Oriental Live", which paid much attention to the communication and discussion on the hot spots of society. Then "Tell It Like It Is" was launched by CCTV in1996, which was a big success. From then on, various TV interviews with various forms began to be shown on TV. With the development for almost twenty years, interview programs have made great influence on people’s life. Therefore, many scholars would keep an eye on the researches of TV interview programs. When it comes to the analysis of the structure of language, Halliday’s Systemic-Functional Grammar must be very important to realize the interpersonal function. However, finding it’s not enough to analyze the language only from the perspective of Systemic-Functional Linguistics, James R. Martin set up the Appraisal System in1990s to focus on the effect of evaluation. In the thesis, the author tries to conduct the research based on the framework of Martin’s Appraisal Theory, which may provide a new way to analyze the language from the perspective of evaluation. In the thesis,15transcribed texts from Yang Lan One on One with total34,160words are coded and analyzed. Under the framework of Engagement System, the author carries out the research with the application of both qualitative and quantitative methods. With the help of the annotative tool-UAM Corpus Tool, the author attempts to find out the distributions and the features of engagement resources as well as the ways to realize evaluation. In the whole texts, dialogic contraction is more than dialogic expansion. Under the category of dialogic contraction, the occurrences of disclaim far exceed the occurrences of proclaim. Within the category of dialogic expansion, entertain far exceeds attribute. In Yang Lan’s language, dialogic expansion is more than dialogic contraction. Entertain, counter, deny and attribute are the major engagement resources. And the engagement resources with low frequencies are endorse, concede and distance. While in the guests’ texts, dialogic contraction far exceeds dialogic expansion. Entertain, deny, counter and pronounce are the major engagement resources. And the engagement resources with low frequencies are distance, endorse, and concede. It’s not hard to find that in the host’s language, dialogic expansion is more than dialogic contraction. While in contrast, dialogic expansion is overwhelmed with dialogic contraction in the guests’ texts. The answer and the demonstration are also conducted in the later discussion in the thesis. This thesis employs Martin’s Appraisal Theory to explore the interpersonal meaning and how the effect of evaluation is achieved. It not only provides a new perspective for the realization of interpersonal meaning, but also has some practical meaning in conducting successful communication.
