The traditional Chinese simple materialist view of nature represented in the theory of“Qi—Yinyang and Five Elements”and Zhou Yi is the root of the theoretical study onthe qin overtone. On one hand, the simple materialist view of nature in ancient Chinagave birth to ideas and thoughts like “natural syllable” and the thought of “even”. Onthe other hand, the thought of “even” is also the framework of the specific topics ofthe theoretical study on the qin overtone which can be divided into three part:“overtone reduction theory”,“overtone corresponding theory”and “the theory ofovertone law system”. With the guidance of the simple materialist view of nature inancient China, scholars in near ancient times, to some degree, gained the scientificknowledge of the acoustic phenomenon that piecewise vibration causes overtoneseries nodes. Moreover, they have reached a considerably high theoretical levelconcerning how three scale fall and rise temperament worked on the temperamentgeneration and relative researches. However, due to the restricted guidance of organicnatural philosophy over scientific research and the lack of scientific acoustic theories, the theoretical study on the qin overtone guided by traditional Chinese simplematerialist view of nature still has a long way to go to become a real scientificdiscipline.
