Academic publication assumes a major role for scholars to communicate, and as an international language, English is indispensable in international academic communication. However, the language somehow renders this academic communication difficult for scholars who are not native speakers, particularly in academic writing. This is also true with graduate students whose papers can rarely be found in foreign-language journals as a result of their current ability in academic writing which is far from satisfactory. Thus, in order to publish and popularize researches, it is of great significance to improve academic writing proficiency of graduate students through proper writing strategies, so as to write English as native people do.This thesis identifies three problems of previous studies on writing strategies and goes over the relations between reading and writing. By summarizing the deficiencies and feedbacks in the teaching of English academic writing, the present author proposes academic writing strategies, and makes a classification on the basis of Yang Shuxian’s and Zuo Jiwei’s theory and the features of academic writings. According to the classification, the author has designed a questionnaire to investigate the correlation between reading English academic papers (which refers to the number of English academic papers the postgraduates read, including intensive reading and extensive reading) and applying academic writing strategies in the first year postgraduates. The author proves that the existence of the correlation between reading English academic papers and applying academic writing strategies. This paper focuses on the following questions:1) What is the general situation of the application of academic writing strategies by non-English graduates?2) Is there a correlation between reading English academic papers and applying academic writing strategies?According to the data analysis with SPSS17.0, some major findings are listed as follows:1) most of the academic writing strategies are applied by postgraduates but the frequency is different:the self-motivate strategies are the most frequently applied while the planning strategies are the least.2)42.5percent of academic writing strategies have correlation with English academic reading."Making outline in Chinese" has negative correlation with English academic reading while others have positive correlations with English academic reading.In the end, some pedagogical implications and limitations are put forward. The author also gives some suggestions to the further related researches.
