Report Cn Chinese-English Translation Of Academic Papers On Energy Storage

This is a report on the Chinese-English practice translation of two academic papers on energy storage,which were written by a well-known professor in the field of energy storage research and published in top journals in the field in China.This report first introduces the source,background,content,and significances of the practice translation project,and then compares the source texts with some English academic papers written by foreign researchers and published in international authoritative journals so as to analyze and identify the characteristics of the content and language of the source texts to be translated and the texts being compared.Hence the difficulties in the course of the translation are detected and the overall approach to the translation is conceived:to solve the difficulties and problems using the Functional Equivalence Theory by Nida.Building on the Functional Equivalence Theory,this translation project describes in detail the problems arising in the process of translation from the perspectives of lexicon,syntax,discourse and style,and formulates four relevant strategies:the context strategy for the selection of word meaning,the splitting-integrating strategy for the syntactic structure,the cohesion-coherence strategy for the discourse,and the voice transformation strategy for the language style.Specifically,the context strategy for the selection of word meaning refers to determination of an appropriate meaning of a polysemous word according to the context,so as to achieve lexical equivalence.The splitting-integrating strategy for the syntactic structures applied to the splitting and integration of the source sentences is in agreement with the characteristics of the sentence and the logic of the meaning so as to achieve semantic equivalence.The cohesion-coherence strategy for discourse serves as a translation device to achieve discourse equivalence between the source and the target texts.And the voice transformation strategy for the language style refers to choose the appropriate voice based on characteristics and differences of languages so as to achieve the stylistic equivalence of source text and target text.In order to guarantee the functional equivalence,the translator invites peer experts to proofread the translation and the translator herself compares the translation version with parallel English texts from international journals in relevant research field.The translator gets invaluable feedback from peer experts and improves the translation version with idiomatic expressions.
