Professional English in Use: Law, which introduces the general knowledge related to the UK?s legal system, as well as the functional language used by practicing lawyers in their daily work, is a book written for those who possess the intermediate or advanced level of English and require the usage of legal English in their work and study. In the meantime, it can also be a perfect guidebook for the participants in ILEC exam(International Legal English Certificate). With the spread of English as the predominant language in international economy and politics, and the optimum alternative to resolve conflicts and frictions, legal English has become a global phenomenon, therefore the study of legal English is of great significance. The report is based on the E-C translation of some excerpts of Professional English in Use: Law, and mainly takes the method of exemplifying to analyze the linguistic features of legal English and the translation skills. Legal English uses a number of old-fashioned words, Latin and French terms, terms of art and jargons, and ordinary words with special meanings, therefore those words should be translated under the Equivalent-Effect principle to reveal the original meaning of the text. Besides, long sentences, conditional sentences and passive sentences are frequently applied in legal English text, whilst translating the attention should be paid to clarify the main clause and subordinate clause, the modifiers and the statement of law, and do the translation in a flexible manner. As the report manifests, professional texts like this with wide scope of knowledge set higher demands on translators, requiring them not only to have a clear and overall comprehension of law, but also be equipped with qualified language competence both in source language and target language. It is hoped that this report is able to present some referential value for the readers and translators regarding this field.
