A Study Of Translation Of English Legal Texts

With the globalization of economy, legal activities conducted are of importance in the world. With the deep-development of the domestic legal research, many foreign popular legal theories and the latest dynamic and authoritative scholar’s works were introduced to China constantly, delivering very rich and valuable legal culture information for China’s legal science, legislative and judicial organs and the whole society’s people, and many experts and scholars at home and abroad who have been in the learning of legal English and legal translation made valuable exploration. But overall, China’s legal English study still cannot satisfy the need of practice. Based on this, we need to do more efforts in the field of legal translation, and more contributions to higher quality translation. This article aims to explore the characteristics of legal texts, and with good examples, the thesis illustrates major translation techniques for E-C translation of legal texts. The main research content of this paper is as follows:First of all, the translators should be clear that the requirement of legal translation is different from that of common translation: the translators should be demanded of large legal knowledge, especially the law knowledge in Britain and the United States; translation material’s grammar structure in legal text is relatively complex, and also use specific words; The effect of legal translation requirements is quite accurate.Second, the English legal texts have their unique language styles and features. Its language is grave, accurate and rigorous, conforms to the standard procedures, discourses structure stress level, and often has detailed narration and concise expression; Its grammar also will be subject to language requirements:more long sentences, less short sentences, more complex grammatical structures, not much rhetorical device.Again, as in most previous studies of translation principles, the author discussed the suitable legal English translation of some translation principles:the principles of accuracy, rigor and unity. Finally, the author demonstrates the translation of English legal texts by instancing several techniques, including: reducing words in translation, adding words in translation, the choice of word meanings, transformation of the words’speech, positive direction translation and opposite direction of translation and the translation of long and difficult sentences and the techniques of adjusting the order in translation.This paper pays attention to the following two aspects: First, this paper includes two themes:the characteristics of English legal texts and translation principles and skills. Of course, this is not a simple combination of both. The former part of the introduction can make the readers understand and master English systematically legal text language style and the characteristics of the vocabulary, terminology, and the use of grammatical means, and the later part of the study lays a solid foundation for readers; based on this, in combination with the principles of law translation, more improving practice abilities of translation are needed.What’s more, the examples in this thesis are typical, with the corresponding translations, examples are from the representative legal textbooks or magazine published in recent years. The selected articles are basically deletions so that readers can see the original English law. In the process of writing, the author translated carefully and made some changes, to explain the meaning of some terms, carefully analyzing the sentence structures, translations, step by step to help the reader consolidate the familiar translation principle. It is convenient for readers to understand and learn how to understand and use the translation of English legal texts.
