Under the guidance of Leech and Short’s theory of literary stylistics, the thesis analyzes and compares stylistic features of the original text and its translations from different angles and concludes relevant translation techniques for the continuation of the style on the basis of Salinger’s original The Catcher in the Rye and the two different Chinese versions translated respectively by Shi Xianrong and Sun Zhongxu. The Catcher in the Rye, as the only novel of American cloistral writer J. D. Salinger, got great popularity in the United States soon after its publication in 1951. Now it is generally regarded as one of American "modern classic" literature in the 20th century. Mr Shi’s version is widely concerned and then contributes to the development of "The Salinger Industry" in China. The research on The Catcher in the Rye translation largely focuses on protagonist Holden’s psychological conflicts, his mental condition, the nature of the work, language features and thematic meaning through Manipulation Theory, Translation Criticism Theory, Skopos Theory and Hermeneutics. The theoretical basis of this thesis is literary stylistics. Literary stylistics, which bridges linguistics and literary criticism, serves to interpret how the writer expresses and strengthens the thematic significance and aesthetic value through language choices by means of the methodology of linguistics; thus it’s a comparatively objective and scientific approach in literary criticism. The thesis analyzes and compares texts in detail at lexical, syntactic and rhetoric levels around the style from the perspective of literary stylistics. Also, the issue of "deceptive equivalence" is focused in fictional translation. The main conclusion is that the application of the methodology of literary stylistics to the studies of fictional translation benefits the translators since the enhancement of their stylistic awareness enables them to be more sensitive to the aesthetic function and stylistic value of linguistic forms. The so--called excellent translation is the literary text in which the translator rightly integrates exotic works into his native culture and effectively preserves original style during the process of translation. Therefore, different literary stylistic levels should be taken into account when analyzing the continuation of the style and translation strategies of The Catcher in the Rye for literature translation career in the future.
