The Research On Wang Tao’s Mao Shi Ji Shi

There were many annotations on The Book of Poetry since ancient times,Qing Dynasty is one of the most important periods. Wang Tao’s Mao Shi Ji Shi was one of the Confucian classics in this era.It not only reflected the the new changes and achievements in the late Qing Dynasty,But also helped James Legge,a well-known British Missionary,to translate The Book of Poetry into English.Mao Shi Ji Shi’s completion is related to Wang Tao’s life experience and his family academic tradition.Wang Tao began to learn the classics from a very early age,Which had laid solid foundation for the success of his future.In 1849,Wang Tao left home and moved to Shanghai because of the pressure of living, He worked with Walter Henry Medhurst in the London Missionary Society Press.Until 1862, Wang Tao took refuge of Hong Kong because of defamation.For the purpose of transmitting Chinese traditional literature into the world,He left no stone unturned to translate The Chinese Classic. In less than a year,Mao Shi Ji Shi was completed.Mao Shi Ji Shi was written based on genre of annotation.and it had cited a large number of books.It majored in explaining the doubtful words,Although this trait may have the defect of in-completion,it was convenient to search useful information.In the aspect of content,Mao Shi Ji Shi collected numerous statements about The Book of Poetry, Then innovated on the basis of them,he used the methods of comparison、 correction、demonstration and so on.The content involves the interpretation of the collation, textual research and phonological textual criticism.Mao Shi Ji Shi reflected the late Qing Dynasty scribes’development and contribution in The Book of Poetry.Wang Tao showed strong regional classics consciousness in Mao Shi Ji Shi,He was particularly respected "Wu" poetry study,especially Chen Huan, Duan Yucai et al,Mao Shi Ji Shi was based on their achievements.In a few words,it is the inheritance and development in the new historical environment about "poetry" study of Wu. Mao Shi Ji Shi is not only the embodiment of Wang Tao’s academic achievements, but also an important cornerstone in the development of overseas sinology.
