Studies on the Scottish Sinologist James Legge's translation of The Four Books and The Five Classics have been a century-long academic focus for scholars at home and abroad. However, related researches are mostly concentrated on such Confucian classics as: Confucian Analects, the Book of Poetry, and so on. Little attention was put on the translation of the Book of Rites. As one of The Five Classics, the Book of Rites is the treasure of Chinese ancient culture, which is valuable for the study of ancient Chinese society. This is one of the reasons for this thesis to come into being, a research devoted to Legge's translation of the Book of Rites to make up for the absence of this topic in thetranslation field.Language, culture and translation are closely linked. Language is the carrier of culture and culture is the soil for the development and survival of language. Translation is not only the transition of language, but also the communication of different cultures. And this thesis mainly studies the translation strategies of the culturally-loaded words in Legge's translation of the Book of Rites, which hopefully will help us to visualize more related facts, and to find out suggestions for practical skills for the translation of traditional classical Chinese works.The first chapter of the thesis is mainly an introduction to the essential aspects of the Book of Rites, such as its origin, development, contents, linguistic features and status. An important part of this chapter is the literature review of studies on the translation of the Book of Rites, its dissemination in the west and the introduction to James Legge and the previous research on his translation. Finally comes the research framework of the thesis, including the theoretical base, purpose or significance and method of the research. The second chapter mainly analyzes James Legge's translation strategies, such as literal translation, liberal translation, footnote, transliteration and paraphrase in translating culturally-loaded elements of the Book of Rites, which probes into the advantages and disadvantages of these translation strategies in translating Chinese classics in order to provide some useful references for the translation of similar works.
