Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out, a novel written by Mo Yan, the first Chinese writer of China to win the Nobel Prize for literature, has received high reputation by the readers since its debut. Meanwhile, the English version translated by Howard Goldblatt also has received good popularity in the western world.Scholars in China have carried out many researches on the English version Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out, but most of them focus on the micro study of the text guided by some theory. For example, these researches tend to study the translation methods or strategies adopted by Howard Goldblatt with regard of certain aspects such as the transferring of literary styles and narrative modes. This thesis aims to make an in-depth analysis on the English version Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out from the perspective of ideology by adopting the qualitative research, textual analysis and comparative method. By comparing the source text and the target text of the novel, this research will explore the influence of ideology on the choice of source text and the adoption of translation strategies.This thesis is composed of five chapters:Chapter one gives an account of the background information of the thesis and also points out the research purposes, significance, questions and the organization of the thesis. Chapter two conducts a survey on the previous study of ideology, including Andre Lefevere’s Rewriting Theory. It also reviews the previous study of influences of ideology on literary translation and gives a brief account of the original text and target text of Life And Death Are Wearing Me Out. Chapter three concentrates on the research method of the thesis, including the qualitative research, textual analysis and comparative method. Chapter four mainly deals with the case study of Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out from the perspective of ideological manipulation. It focuses on the ideological influence on individual’s choice of source text and social ideological influence on the choice of source text. And it also elaborates the literary ideological, political ideological and social-cultural ideological manipulation in translator’s choice of translation strategies. Chapter five is the conclusion. It presents a summary of the major findings and limitations of the study. And it also gives some suggestions for further researches.The study shows that ideology manipulates the literary translation chiefly in two aspects. For one thing, ideology influences the choice of source text and for another it also manipulates the adoption of translation strategies. The choice of source text is influenced by the translator’s and readers’preference as well as economic factors. And the choice of translation strategies is influenced by literary, political and social-cultural ideology.
