Chorus is an art form in which multiple voices singing in combination.It requires the highly unified sonority of the singers, and is one of themost popular and wide-spread music performing activities. The human voiceis the expressing tool in chorus, and has its advantages through whichthe idea, emotion of the music is expressed while the emotional reactionof the audience is stirred. Chorus competition, unlike other competitions,has unique features. It is a large scaled contest, with a great numberof participants, and the venue might change in the course of thecompetition. There is a great variety of chorus works, with differentconfiguration and category, so the grouping in competition becomes moreand more detailed. The development of chorus started late in China,therefore we are lagged behind the international standard, which effectsthe connection between Chinese and international choruses. Through acomparison, analysis and study of Chinese and international choruscompetition rules, the author expects to provide some suggestions as toorganizing, facilitating and improving the chorus development in China,and help to elevate Chinese chorus level to that of the internationalchoruses. The author also provides references for the choice of work, thecombination of voices as well as the diversity of chorus styles.The thesis takes the chorus competition rules as its objective of study,explores the form, grouping, requirement of repertoire, and the judgingstandards in chorus competitions in China and abroad. It emphasizes theanalysis of grouping and other specified requirements in thesecompetitions, and finds out the differences between Chinese andinternational competitions; it discovers that the more and more detailedgrouping policies in these competitions have exerted great influence onthe diversity of chorus works. Through comparison and suggestion on therules of chorus competition, the thesis provides some references for thedevelopment of Chinese choruses.
