| With the emergence and popularity of smart mobile devices, more andmore mobile learning tools and learning software have been accepted and used bylearners, particularly a variety of tools and software based on the Android platform.The powerful integration of multimedia which makes the information presented invarious forms (text, graphics, audio and so on) meets the needs (voice, shape, meanand so on) which are involved in English vocabulary learning process. Androidplatform becomes an ideal platform for mobile learning because of its wide popularity,powerful integration of multimedia, strong mobility and other features. Meanwhile,the theory of multimedia learning in second language acquisition which is establishedby foreign researchers provides a new basis for finding effective ways to help learnerslearn vocabulary. This paper attempts to combine the theory of multimedia learning insecond language acquisition and Android mobile devices to design and develop amultimedia vocabulary learning tool which runs on Android smart device, meets thelearners’ needs of learning anytime, and achieve truly self-learning.Firstly this paper describes the background of the study, current research,research programs, research methods and the significance of the research. Secondly,the paper introduces the theoretical and methodological foundation of multimedialearning tools for English vocabulary, namely the related theories of mobile learning,the theory of multimedia learning in second language acquisition, the object-orienteddesign thought and the iterative method, and indicates the feasibility, the theoreticalsupport and the methods for the designing of the multimedia learning tool of Englishwords. Thirdly, on the basis of the systems engineering approach of learning softwaredesign, the paper analyzes needs of the tool’s function from four aspects of theexisting vocabulary learning tools, the target user of the learning tool, the function ofthe learning tool and the teaching value of the learning tool. According to requirements analysis and design principles, we design the overall architecture of thelearning tool, and work detailed design of the word query, word learning, words anddatabase of this system functions. This paper analyzes and summaries the positiveimpact on vocabulary learning. Then, the various functional modules of the tool areachieved by writing code on Basic4Android development platform.The tool achievesthe design goal, which can run normally in the Android simulator and Android systemmobile phone. Finally, the developer test the two aspects of function and performanceof this tool. |
