"South Pyongyang" is the secondary capital of Koguryo that has capital system and it is one of Koguryo’s three capitals. The earliest record of "South Pyongyang" in ancient literature can be. found in Samguk sagi. It is recorded that "it is written in the classics that Geunchogo-wang thirteen occupied "South Pyongyang", Koguryo and made Seoul its capital for one hundred and five years. " After the liberation of Korean Peninsula, the Korean archaeological research is rich, especially the investigation and excavation of Long-lasting Mountain Town and its surrounding city ruins near Hwanghae from 1985 to 1988, which is not only the milestone of Koguryo’s archaeological history but also fill gaps in the history of Koguryo. The Long-lasting Mountain Town is located in E Yangli, Sinwon-gun, South Hwanghae. North Korean scholars believe that the Jang-su Sansung Town is the South Pyongyang of Koguryo in the fourth Century. On the contrary, most of South Korean scholars think that " South Pyongyang" of Koguryo is located beside Han River, near Seoul today. It existed from the 63rd year of Koguryo’s King Long-lasting (475AD), when the capital Seoul of Baekje is occupied, to 7th year of King Yangwon (551AD) when the joint army of Silla and Baekje recovered the area along Han River including Seoul.In order to know better the position and historical status of " South Pyongyang", Koguryo, this paper attempts to make a research by combining literature about South Pyongyang of Koguryo with archaeological materials based on previous research. This paper mainly consists of three parts:introduction, main body and conclusion. The first chapter is about introduction, the second, third and fourth chapters are the main body while the fifth chapter is about the conclusion.Chapter one is introduction. It mainly introduces the purpose, significance and the domestic as well as foreign related researches.Chapter two is the process of Koguryo southward. This chapter mainly introduces the background of the implementation of Koguryo’s Southward Policy, domestic and international factors for Koguryo King Long-lasting’s moving capital to Pyongyang, and Koguryo and baekje’s battle along Han River.Chapter three is the literature research of* South Pyongyang", Koguryo. This chapter studies the location of "South Pyongyang" from the angle of literature through analyzing the records of South Pyongyang, Koguryo and researching the location of South Pyongyang in literature.Chapter four is an archaeological review of "South Pyongyang", Koguryo. This chapter explores the location of South Pyongyang, Koguryo form the angle of archaeology by inspecting the Koguryo relics near Jang-su Sansung Town and Han River.Chapter five is the conclusion. It deduces and summaries the location and historical status of "South Pyongyang", Koguryo.
