Determiners is a new term in modern grammar, which may be used to determine what kind of reference a noun phrase has:it is definite, partitive or universal. Nowadays maritime transportation is one of the most important modes of transportation in the world. Maritime English used as the working language plays a significant role in shipping safety. Maritime News (MN) concludes various reports happening in maritime world, which makes people have a better understanding of the new developments in international shipping world. It is generally accepted that determiners formed by a set of closed-class items will make contribution to effective reading comprehension. Based on the previous research results, the study is to provide a practical analysis of the application of determiners in maritime news by adopting a corpus-based research method.The present thesis investigates the use of determiners in maritime news, with a qualitative and quantitative method. With the assistance of AntConc and SPSS, the findings on determiners in the discourse of maritime English are acquired through a comparative study with general English. The achieved statistics are discussed and analyzed from the perspective of lexical density, lexical frequency and distributions of three categories. It comes with the result that in terms of lexical density, the maritime news and general English do not differ significantly. The top ten determiners and the least frequently used ten determiners are acquired by AntConc. Predeterminers are less favored by MNC. The distributions of the central determiners in MNC are significantly different from that in Brown. Post determiners are less favored by MNC.It is hoped that the study investigating the use of determiners in the discourse of maritime news can help the readers of maritime news enhance reading speed and the study of determiners in this thesis can benefit teachers in teaching. Meanwhile, the thesis can help students have a better command of determiners.
