The present project report is written based on the translation of Chinese version of Measures of Jiangsu Province on Mediation and Arbitration of Labor and Personnel Disputes and the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Labor-dispute Mediation and Arbitration. Through analyzing the major issues and difficulties arising in the course of the translation, the project report aims to explore the principles of translating legislative text and the strategies for translating the sentences with "的" structure in Chinese legislative text. The author had the honor to participate in the trial translation of the Measures of Jiangsu Province on Mediation and Arbitration of Labor and Personnel Disputes, which is a translation program of The Legal Affairs office of the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province undertaken by the author’s supervisor. The project report analyzes the features of Chinese and English legislative language form three aspects, namely the authority, the prescriptive nature, and the vagueness of legislative language. At syntactic level, three features are investigated. First, sentences in legislative text are generally declarative sentences. Second, sentences in legislative text are considerably complex and long. Third, conditional clause is extensively used in legislative text. The major issues and difficulties of the project lie in the understanding and the translation of legal terms, English rendering of expressions with Chinese characteristics, and the translation of Chinese sentences with "的" structure. By making use of parallel texts and case study, the report discusses the solutions for the above issues. Firstly, the translation of legal terms should follow the principle of consistency and identity. Secondly, the translation of the expressions with Chinese characteristics should follow the conventional expressions. Thirdly, the report investigates three translation strategies for the sentence with "的" structure. First, it can be rendered as an adverbial clause of condition. Second, it can be rendered as a non-finite verb. Last but not least, the subject of in a zero-subject sentence should be complemented.C-E translation of legislative text requires translators to possess certain legal knowledge as well as translation skills. The project report presents and analyzes the major issues and difficulties with attempt to provide experience for the future translation of legislative text.
