A Study Of The English-Version Web Pages Of Chinese Universities From A Perspective Of Cultural Differences

The Chinese culture and the western culture were different from the very beginning when generated.The two cultures developed in its own way, as a result, the differences were bigger and bigger. Cultural differences affected people’s life in a profound way, to some extent, should impede the communication. Unfortunately, English-version web pages of Chinese universities, a kind of special communications is evolved. This is a study on English-version web pages of Chinese universities from a perspective of cultural differences, with focusing on the way of thinking and expressing by comparing the differences between the English-version web pages of Chinese universities and the English universities. The materials are ten universities in China and ten abroad.English-version web pages of Chinese universities is not only the translation of words but also its designation.The paper aims to analyze not only the words but also the web structures, which has been neglected by scholars before, and also is the innovation point of this paper. By this, I found that the English-version web pages were translated word by word from the Chinese ones. From the text contents, the main problems are tedious, different passage and sentence structures, etc. From the web structure, Chinese universities are of stative feature while English universities are of dynamic feature. The study shows the obvious differences in the way of thinking and expressing, the thinking and expressing type of the Chinese is spiral and curvy while the English is triangular and linear. From the introduction contents, Chinese universities are of vagueness, while English ones are of accuracy. The paper aims to find out the differences and the reasons, and then solve the problems.
