The Brazilian abolitionism movement, which was from 1879 to 1888, was a social movement with a wide range, high-organization, and deep foundation. In this movement, the abolitionists had high-definition idea. It was divided into two stages with 1885. Methods and strategies what the abolitionists adopted were gradual transformation from moderation to radicalization and illegality. They took a series of actions included abolitionism propaganda, petitions to Parliament, helping slaves escape from plantations, for the purpose of the abolition of slavery. The abolitionism movement in Sao Paulo had more large-scale and remarkable results, and had an obvious influence on the surrounding area. It also accelerated the action of abolition by the empire. The abolitionism movement has been widely supported and participated by many sectors of Brazilian society. It was a strong impetus to the process of abolition of slavery in Brazil, and stand for an important step towards democratization and modernization of this country.
