The paper is about the phonetics of Xiapu dialect. By the way of field research and further summarization, this paper is trying to take a thorough but systematic description in its sound and pronunciation. At the very beginning, the paper is to make brief introduction about the geographical conditions in Xiapu city and its historical development, and also the development of the dialect and its present study situation. Then there are four chapters in all. The first chapter is about the phonetic systems, which includes the description and explanation about Chinese consonants, Chinese vowels, and tones by taking a table. The second chapter is to represent those vocabularies and phrase expressions that share same pronunciation in a charter. The third chapter is to make a historical comparison about the phonetics between Xiapu dialect and Guangyun languages, and then to draw a conclusion the phonetic characteristics of Xiapu dialect. The fourth chapter is going to analyze some representative phonetic phenomena in Xiapu dialect, and mainly care about the features of phonetic changes and literally reading with different pronunciations. The last chapter is to make a synchronic comparison and contrast about the phonetics between Xiapu dialect and Fu’an dialect so as to further find out the special characteristics of Xiapu dialect. At length, there goes a general conclusion about the previous chapters. The paper is mainly aimed at figure out the phonetic features of Xiapu dialect in the process of firsthand research and further description. Also, this article is going to have a supplement for the raw materials at hand and with a hope to provide more reliable but raw materials if necessary and with a wish to make a little but fundamental contribution for further useful study about dialects located in the east of Fujian province in the future.
