At present, the international communication has been more and more frequent, so the needs for the talents who could speak other languages fluently has been increased year by year. Compared with the needs for the people who could speak other languages, the needs for talents who could speak English is the largest, owning to the special status of English. As a result, English has been attached great importance to in China and is regarded as one of the most important subjects that the students in all ages have to learn. Actually, English is so important that it even determines whether the students could be enrolled into senior high schools or universities. Despite of the significance of English learning, the students still have much difficulty in learning it and it is even harder for the students in colleges to improve their English proficiency. One of the reasons for such difficulty is that the differences between the English teaching in senior high schools and universities is so large that the students could not get used to the English teaching after they are admitted into universities. Therefore, it is necessary to find out the ways to coordinate the English teaching in senior high schools and universities and the first task is to investigate the influence of different vocabulary teaching methods on the English proficiency of the students in senior high schools and universities, which is exactly the major concern of this dissertation.Such a dissertation is of great theoretical and practical significance: theoretically speaking, the experiments about the influence of different teaching methods applicable for vocabulary teaching on the students’ linguistic competence will provide some useful information for the linguists to reveal the relations between the language proficiency and the language input. The interview of the students will show some details about the changes of students’ attitude toward English learning when their teachers employ different teaching methods. Practically speaking, this dissertation could help the teachers in senior high schools and universities to deepen their understanding of the influence of teaching methods. It is revealed that based on the theory of second language acquisition, and the historical development of English teaching methods, this paper puts forward five vocabulary teaching methods which are involved in this dissertation are applicable for different situations so the teachers should choose the proper one to cope with the problems that obstruct the students from making more progresses. Besides, this dissertation will help the teachers in senior high schools and universities to realize the significance of improving the efficiency of their methods applicable for vocabulary teaching. In short, this dissertation will help both linguists and English teachers with their researches or teaching activities.This dissertation is carried out from the influences of the different English vocabulary teaching methods on the senior high school and college. The research consist of two parts: an experiment and an interview. The experiment will take about three months to as to make sure of the validity of the research results. Twelve classes are involved in this experiment: six of them are selected from Yiling senior high schools and other six are selected from Hubei Three Gorges Polytechnic. In the five classes from senior high school, the teachers intentionally make use of each of the five teaching methods and the efficiency of the teaching methods will be tested by means of a series of comprehensive exams to test the students’ capability in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The five classes in universities are also involved in the same experiment of the classes in senior high school. Hence, the results of the experiment could be proved the efficiency of different teaching methods.The research showed that the teachers should choose the proper methods based on the exact situation. The teachers in senior high schools and universities should communicate with each other regularly so that they could know how to adjust their teaching activities to prepare the students well for the learning activities in universities.In order to present the results of this research systematically, this dissertation will be divided into five parts:The first part is the introduction of this dissertation, which is composed of research background, research significance and research design. In the second part, the previous researches in western countries and China about vocabulary teaching is introduced, and extract five English vocabulary teaching methods used in this experiment, as well as the originality of this research. The third part and the fourth part are the most important parts of this dissertation. In the third part, the experiment of five kinds of vocabulary teaching method is introduced, including the object of teaching experiment, the experiment method and the process as well as the data statistics and analysis. In the fourth part, five pieces of suggestions about how to improve the efficiency of English vocabulary teaching in senior high schools and universities are introduced in details. The last part is the conclusion of the dissertation, in which the major findings, the limitation of this research and the suggestions for the researches in the future are analyzed. Following such steps, the findings of this research are introduced in details so as to help the teachers in senior high schools and universities to improve the efficiency of English teaching.
