It is a long time since the language policy came about. But it is not for long since the language policy came about as an independent field of study. In the 1950 s, the scholars in foreign countries started the specialist studies in language policy. W hereafter, the Chinese scholars also began the studies in multi-level and multiply perspectives. The essay makes the research based on the comparison of the policy of common language, minority language and foreign language between Chinese and American language policy. It analyzes thoroughly the development history of Sino-American language policy. In chapter one, the essay illustrates the importance and significance of the comparative study of Sino-American language policy. It summarizes the previous related research of the language policy. Combining the previous research, the author proposes the research direction and focus, which is the comparative study of Sino-American language policy in the macro level. In chapter two, the essay analyzes thoroughly the development history of Sino-American language policy in common language, minority language and foreign language. In chapter three, a detailed comparison is done on account of the landmark specific language policy in the recent 30 years between China and United states. According to the analysis of the background, content, effect and so on of the policy, the essay concludes the difference among the purpose, property, cultural concept and language planning set between the Sino-American language policies. In chapter four, it indicates the inspiration on the Chinese language policy based on the American language policy. It summarizes that the policy making needs to pay attention to the implicit language policy, to emphasize the Chinese language, to protect the minority language, and to make the national security oriented foreign language policy. In chapter five, combing the research approach, the author generalizes the main points of this essay.
