The Study On Confucianism’s Doctrine Of The Mean

The Mean is the important ideology of Confucianism and it is also the concept and standard of behavior of ancient Chinese people.With the development of society,the doctrine of the Mean has gradually evolved into national culture traditions and standards of social behavior which have been rooted in the hearts of Chinese nation. Beginning with the sages’ hold-mean thoughts, ancient Confucinists expecially Confucius first proposed the doctrine of the Mean which had the meaning of moral priciples,it occupied the important place in Confucius’ thought and run throught his whole ideological system.Its connation was extremely wide.It was both the the world view of directing Confucius to know the society and the philosophy of life on conducting social problems.The doctrine of the Mean possed extreme universality and compatiblity and fully inherited and developed by the scholar of Confucius(Zi si) and Zi si’s disciples(particularly Chung-Yung).They also promoted it onto the height of metaphysical cosmology and ontolog.Then the doctrine of the Mean was completely accepted and substantially elucidated by Meng zi and Xun zi.At the same time it underwent the development process of growth and maturity.After that the doctrine of the Mean was remoulded as Neo-confucianism and the study of mind,it was brought into the system of Neo-confucianism and finally formed an integrated ideological system which had both physical methodilogical meaning and metaphysical ontological value.As the best part of Confucian philosophy, the doctrine of the Mean is the toppest ethical standards and popular principles of methodology.Under the morden background of building a harmonious society,Confucianism’s doctrine of Mean will have the important reference value and practical significance on practicing the scientific worldview and making the decisions on the basis of science and democracy.The research purpose of this paper is by stating how Confucius creating the doctrine of the Mean,how Confucius’ s scholar(Zi si) and Zi si’s disciples inheriting and developing Confucius’ thought,how Meng zi,Xun zi and Yi zhuan making it gradually be mature,and how Cheng-Zhu remoulding it Neo-confucianism and the study of mind and making it be an integrated ideological system which had both physical methodilogical meaning and metaphysical ontological value.This paper aims at using the integrated system about the doctrine of the Mean to explain and correct the Mean which has been alienated and establishing the ideological roots for building harmonious society.The main research method of this paper is by the study of literature.First I read some ancient scripture,such as the Analects,Yi zhun,Chung-Yung,Meng zi,Xun zi,the Anthology of Two-Cheng and so on.Then I compiled and settled some writings which were created by the morden and contemporary scholars to explain the doctrine of the Mean of the Confucinism. And then I researched and study more than hundreds of academic dissertions,joural articles and meeting reports and so on in the ways fiding more by following up a cule.By researching and studying these literature,I finally made the formation and development of the Confucinism’s doctrine of the Mean clear and restored the integrated ideological system which had both physical methodilogical meaning and metaphysical ontological value.The concept and innovation point of this paper are as follows.This paper targeted,deep stated and researched the Confucinism’s doctrine of the Mean.To accomplished its task,this paper sets several sections as follows.First,it is the doctrine of Confucius;Second,it is Meng zi,Xun xi and Yi ’s concepts of mid-way;Third,it is systematiced dictrine of the Mean; And last,it is the the influence of the doctrine of the Mean.This paper’s innovation point is by systematically teasing and summarying the development course of the Confucinism’s doctrine of the Mean,trying to build an integrated ideological system which had both physical methodilogical meaning and metaphysical ontological value.Finally,we will use the integrated system to generally and dialectically correct the Mean which has been alienated and indicate its important value on build the harmious society.
