In the 20th century music history, Stravinsky’s music composing occupied a vital position. His compositions were influenced by his different personal growth experience:started from early imitating Russian Classical music period and Post-Romantic musical style, then gradually turned to neo-classicism, and serialism eventually.This article focused on Stravinsky’s eleven piano solo pieces composed during his early and middle period. Through analysis of harmony techniques, distinct diversified musical vocabularies in these two periods were concluded. And comparison of inheritance and development about these two periods resulted in the further understanding of the value and significance.Stravinsky’s early stage piano solo pieces embodied the inheritance and exploration of traditional tonal music; his middle stage represented his rethinking and reconstruction of Baroque and Classical music. In conclusion, no matter in the early or the middle stage, his music vocabularies still derived from the classical tonality system. While according to the need in composing process, he broke through traditional thought mode.From the perspective of structure, this paper is divided into four chapters:the first chapter introduced Stravinsky’s life and the composing background of his elven piano solo pieces; the second and third chapter detailedly analyzed the application of harmony technique in each piece during the early and middle period from four aspects:mode material, chord material, chord relationship and tonality layout; the fourth chapter made a comparison of early and middle stage harmonic techniques, it was to sort out the composing variation processes of elven piano solo pieces.This article tries to research how the art environment in the first half of 20th century promoted Stravinsky’s exploration, integration, conception and innovation about the multiple musical culture by studying the piano sole pieces. Thinking about how his personal aesthetic idea influenced the application of his composing technique, then his distinct music vocabulary and innovative style formed. Then to understand what kind of instructive thought did his composing technique and idea provide for the music composing since 20th century.
