French overture was very popular among the composers including J.S.Bach, due to its importance as a type of genre in the Baroque era. In Bach’s works, there are some relatively independent French overtures and other works with French overture style. This paper is focused on its stylistic conception and its performance practice from Bach’s French overtures and pieces with French overture style in his keyboard literatures. This paper has three sections. The first one introduces French overture, its definition, form, style, and how it was adapted at the keyboard. The second section picks up five different French overtures and three works with French overture style out of all Bach’s keyboard works, and analyzes them in details. The third section discusses both tempo and dotted rhythm in Bach’s French overtures. Both were crucial and problematic. |
