A Gothic Film Research In Popular Culture Perspective

Gothic art has been playing an important role in the history of Western art, and which originated in the Middle Ages, and prosperity in the late 18 th and 19 th centuries.It also plays its own unique charm in contemporary, and continued for nearly 10 centuries. Moreover, the qualifier "Gothic" crossing different disciplines, including architecture, sculpture, literature, movies. Since the beginning of art of film,the Gothic elements has played an important role in the movie. Since the early 20 th century,German expressionism to start off a dark empty gothic style of a century since the movie film art appears. The early 1990 s, a large number of gothic classic film turned out, which was unstoppable and making filmmakers and fans more curious about this style. A "Gothic" campaign which was launched in London in the 1980 s made Gothic become a widely popular culture,but also made a big change of the traditional Gothic film. This paper is about to explore the reason that how the dark elements from medieval came into the movie as a mainstream culture and the influence and the meaning this phenomenon made on the movie industry.Therefore, this paper tries to analyse the film contains Gothic elements. The analysis will be itemized to separate elements: shape, style, image, narrative, theme and other aspects. Through the the historical development of this class of movies,,we can figure out the influence of popular culture osmotic effect on contemporary film industry.This thesis is divided into five chapters, The first chapter combing origin and main forms of Gothic art, and the Gothic elements of the key concepts discussed in this article and the define to gothic movie;The second chapter describes the development and the evolution of the Gothic movie;Terms of Chapter III, is set from the character, style and space-time image rendering and other forms of analysis features Gothic movie;The fourth chapter, from narrative and theme performance analysis of both content features of Gothic movie;The fifth chapter discusses the film’s gothic aesthetic properties and their popular culture traits.Gothic movies on inheriting the Gothic art peculiar loneliness, tragedy, death and sublime aesthetic qualities, and in the context of the above elements of popular culture has been commercialized and formal transposition.At present, China’s film creation and aesthetic are gradually moving towards pluralism. Although China has no Gothic film yet, China’s film also have less Gothic elements, however, Gothic film and Gothic elements of film have wide audience,especially amony young audience, and is very popular as a non-mainstream cultural.And it is worth to pay attention as a popular cultural phenomenon of the Gothic film and film elements.
