Qingyang suona is played in local weddings and funerals. Performers use happy tone and bitter tone techniques to express joys and sorrows. Qingyang suona music belongs to Ceremony Music, and it is an indispensable part of common people’s life. In recent years, it has been providing composers with abundant inspirations and resources, making itself an important element of fine music performed on stage.Ethnomusicology is the study of music in its cultural context. Based on field study and ethnomusicology theories, this thesis systematically and comprehensively describes and analyses the composition of Qingyang suona music as well as its relationship with the cultural environment, in both microscopic and macroscopic views. This thesis consists of six sections(introduction inclusive). The first section is the introduction; it focuses on the significance of the research and the literature review. The second section briefly describes and explores the external backgrounds and connections of Qingyang suona music, from the perspectives of geography, history and culture. The third section discusses the composition of Qingyang suona music and its artistic characteristics. Section 4 reveals the entertaining and practical functions of the suona music by analyzing the interaction of people’s concepts and behaviors. Section 5 is an investigation on the intrinsic factors of Qingyang suona music through "metaphor" interpretation. The last section provides a justification for the culture value of Qingyang suona music and its existence. This research attempts to provide, on one hand, a broad view of the phenomenon of Qingyang suona music, while on the other, an inquiry into the essence of this very music style. For years, there has been little systematic research and analysis in this field, and such a study would ascertain its own historical and immediate significance. This thesis looks forward to providing the academia an ethnomusicological vision of Qingyang suona music.
