There is a kind of consciousness of homeland in Chi Zijian’s novels. In nearly three decades, there are three ways to look for home in Chi Zijian’s novels: reflections on urban life, seeking home features in natural and recalling the hometown experience from memories. In this paper, I studied how Chi Zijian describes the homeland in novel, explained the meaning of homeland in Chi Zijian’s novels and pointed out the difference meanings of homeland between Chi Zijian’s novels and other fictions.Chi Zijian’s personal experience of life has influenced on the consciousness of homeland in her novels. The childhood and nature of hometown is the important source to Chi Zijian’s writing. And there are some different focalizations in Chi Zijian’s novels. In focalizations of children, animal and mentally disordered person, Chi Zijian’s novels show us a particular image of homeland.Chi Zijian’s novels are used to be puzzled by the homeland quality of urban. As a “late-comers” of urban, Chi Zijian rethinks the moral crisis and the disappearance of cultural diversity brought by modern civilization. Although there is a gap between urban life and rustication, human sympathy is the most important quality of homeland ever in Chi Zijian’s novels.Chi Zijian’s novels have been looking at the possibility of finding features of homeland in nature. Under the influence of the culture of northeast China, animism and pastoral life is advocated in Chi Zijian’s novels. Besides, Chi Zijian inherits the Chinese traditional pastoral ideal and develops the magical interest of pastoral life. Although the image of natural home in Chi Zijian’s novels is a kind of ideal, we have to say it gives us an inspiration of spiritual life style.Hometown complex is the source of understanding of homeland in Chi Zijian’s novels. From The Arctic Village to Da Hinggan Mountains in Chi Zijian’s novels, hometown is the spiritual zone for people to place hope on. Therefore, to continue the life style in hometown, people choose to go back to and stay at their hometown uncompromisingly in Chi Zijian’s novels. Because Chi Zijian’s writing is relay on her experience of hometown, we can find a kind of conservatism in Chi Zijian’s novels. But, hometown is always the ideal homeland in Chi Zijian’s novels, it means a rethink about the present situation that peoples are being lonely and dispossessed.
