The Translation Strategies Of Proverbs In The Dhole Hound

Proverbs are the cultural epitome and essence of a nation. They root in life, and they are above life. More often than not, they have warning significances widely spread among folks, and they are about production, customs, history, culture and civilization, and religion and moral principles. Philosophy and morality are usually embedded in proverbs, which manifest not only the wisdom of a people, but the marvelous cultural context. Therefore, in terms of translation, proverbs are expected to fulfill the great mission, that is, to spread the warnings that have been accumulated for thousands of years, and the philosophy and cultural essence that are embedded in them.The report, based on the translation of The Dhole Hound written by Shen Shixi, is designed to analyze the most prominent and tricky problem in translating the novel, that is, the translation of the proverbs in the novel from Chinese into English. The further analysis and discussion will be done through defining and classifying proverbs, comparing Chinese and English proverbs, interpreting the relevant theories of translating proverbs from Chinese into English, and investigating examples from both The Dhole Hound and other texts. Though there are no fixed criteria in translation, especially the translation of proverbs, the report intends to offer some guidelines to the translation of Chinese proverbs into English, so that the best communication and the most effective cultural transmission could be achieved.
