Jerome Bruner has always been the leading figure as a psychologist and educator, the early Bruner was occupied in the research of cognition and psychology. He also made great contributions to make the cognitive psychological theories systematization and scientization by his scientific spirit, in addition, he led the first cognitive revolution. The early Bruner inherited and developed Piaget’s cognitive theory of wisdom, based on all these theories, Bruner advanced the world-famous three stage theory of cognitive development. He paid great attention to the research of cognitive development and thought that there are some kinds of cognitive structure and laws of development in the cognitive process although this process is invisible. His structure teaching theory and discovery learning method are seen as the very important teaching methods. From the 1950s to the 1970s, Bruner showed solicitude for such concepts as discovery, structure and intuitive thinking. After the 1980s, he often used such concepts as meaning-making, culture and narrative. The change in Bruner’s favored concepts is caused by his epistemological change, The significant changes in Bruner’s views reflected in three aspects. Firstly, from the individual cognitive to culture cognitive; Secondly, from the experiment method to the narrative method; Thirdly, from structure teaching method to the humanistic learning theory. The changes from early Bruner to later Bruner have its own ideological background and development requirements. Early Bruner devoted himself to study cognitive theory such as feeling and thought. Bruner based his opinion of cognitive psychology, cultural psychology, psycholinguistic and language acquisition theory on his cognitive theory. In the 1970s and 1980s, he shapes his psychological theory. In this paper, I will discuss the relationship of language and cognition on the basis of Early Bruner’s language cognition theory and later Bruner’s cultural psychology.
